For many years, Norman David harbored a dream of establishing a company that would support, promote and present his original jazz music. During the course of formulating his plan and setting up operations, he decided two things: (1) he would definitely showcase his own music, but he would also make it a point of presenting works by other talented and significant composers; and (2) he needed a partner—the work was involved and it was just a good idea to have someone else whose talent and resolve he respected.

After a considerable amount of time drawing up the complex paperwork required to establish a non-profit company, SiDE ONE JAZZ became a reality in late 2004. Norman, who was now the President and Artistic Director of the fledgling company, still had not taken on a partner, but he knew that would come soon. However, for the next year, other composing projects and teaching obligations took up most of his time.

Among his activities, Norman had begun teaching at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts in Erie, PA. Lars Halle, a prominent jazz composer and arranger in Philadelphia, had approached Norman on behalf of the Governor’s School to see if he wanted to fill an opening on the faculty. During his second summer in Erie, Norman realized that his potential partner in SiDE ONE JAZZ was literally right in front of him. Norman has very high standards and realized that Lars was the perfect choice . Lars happily accepted the offer to join SiDE ONE JAZZ as Vice President and Artistic Co-Director.

Obligations for Norman and Lars ate up the better part of another year until, in early 2007, they decided it was finally time to get the ball rolling seriously. The first Board was assembled, as well as an outstanding artistic panel, comprised of a who’s-who of jazz performers and composers.

SiDE ONE JAZZ’s first benefit concert took place on May 13, 2009, in Philadelphia at the Prince Music Theater Black Box. It was a resounding success and the company has since presented a number of exciting concerts. Now is the future for new jazz in Philadelphia!
